OBJECTIVES
The project WANDA aims at establishing a sustainable, environmentally sound and transnationally coordinated approach in ship waste management - including the development and implementation of related measures - along the Danube in order to protect this water resource and its multifaceted ecosystems.
(see brochure..)
ACTIVITIES AND BENEFITS
Based on a joint conceptual framework national ship waste management concepts will be elaborated and amended by one partner per country (AT, SK, HU, HR, RS, BG, RO) involved.
Exemplary pilot actions - practical solutions for the collection of hazardous, e.g. oily and greasy as well as other ship waste - will be implemented on the Upper (AT, SK, HU) and Lower Danube (RO). Activities will include clarification of requirements, pilot implementation and providing lessons learned.
A financing model for oily and greasy ship waste will be elaborated for the Upper Danube (AT, SK, HU) and the Lower Danube (RO). Activities will include clarification of basic local parameters, development of a model including procedures for fee collection and an implementation concept.
Transnational coordination involving all project partners as well as information exchange with ICPDR, Germany, the Danube Commission, CCNR, Sava Commission and other relevant stakeholders will be performed with regard to ship waste management concepts, pilot actions and the financing model.

COHERENCE WITH NATIONAL POLICIES AND STRATEGIES IN ROMANIA
The National Action Plan for Environmental Protection sustains, promotes and monitors the projects that have a significant impact on the environment, making sure that the national and international laws are complied with. The plan also includes a special chapter: Collection and treatment system for ship-generated waste and pollution prevention on the Romanian Danube sector.
The National Sustainable Development Strategy (2008) is a national document in keeping with the EU Sustainable Development Strategy. Its goal is to offer economic prosperity, social equity and cohesion, the promotion of democratic institutions in Romania. The WANDA project connects to this document because it aims to achieve environmental protection through measures that make it possible to decouple economic growth from negative environmental impacts.
The Strategy for Sustainable Transport 2007-2013 and 2020, 2030 contains a special chapter dedicated to maritime and inland water way transport. The main goals are the promotion of maritime and IWT transport while providing safe solutions for environmental protection. WANDA supports this by offering the best solutions for the treatment, collection and disposal of ship-generated waste on the Danube.
The Sectoral Operational Programme- Transportation (SOP-T 2007-2013) has as priority axes no. 3 the Modernization of the transport sector aiming at a higher degree of environmental protection, human health and passenger safety. WANDA sustains SOP-T in the key area of intervention no. 3, related to minimizing the adverse effects of transport on the environment.

ROLE AND ACTIVITIES OF ROMANIAN PARTNERS
Based on a common frame work concept APDM will be responsible for the adaptation of the Romanian ship waste management concept. As the work package leader of WP4, APDM is also responsible for planning and implementing pilot activities regarding the collection of oily and greasy ship waste and other ship waste on the Lower Danube (RO).
Additionally APDM is in charge of the transnational harmonization, coordination and lobbying activities planned within the WANDA project. All activities will be coordinated within the WANDA project consortium, with the relevant stakeholders, Danube riparian countries and the WANDA Advisory Expert Group (see above).
APDF will participate in the enhancement of the Romanian ship waste management concept. Furthermore, APDF will be involved in drafting and be responsible of implementing pilot activities regarding a coordinated collection of oily and greasy ship waste on the Lower Danube (RO).
